Building a brighter future: my diysos beverley story

Join me, Lesley from The Decorative Life, as I share my incredible experience volunteering for the DIYSOS team in Beverley. It was an honour to contribute to such a meaningful project, helping to create a brand new Youth Hub for the local community. This journey wasn't just about paint and plaster; it was about building hope and a safe space for young people.

A hands-on journey: creating the beverley youth hub

Recently, I had the absolute privilege of volunteering as a painter on BBC’s DIY SOS, helping to transform a building into a Youth Club for local children. It’s something I’ll always be proud of — not because it was on television, but because of who it was for.

Everyone involved gave their time freely, and the focus was firmly on creating a space that felt safe, welcoming and uplifting for young people who really need it. When you know a room is going to be used by children and teenagers — to learn, relax, socialise and grow — you approach the work with a different kind of care.

More than just walls: a lasting legacy for youth

What struck me most was the teamwork. Skilled trades all working side by side, with kindness, good humour and a shared purpose. No egos, no fuss — just people wanting to do a good job for the next generation. It was genuinely moving to be part of.

It also reminded me why I’ve stayed in this trade for so many years. Decorating isn’t just about paint and finishes; it’s about how spaces make people feel. A thoughtfully finished room can lift spirits, encourage confidence, and create a sense of belonging.

My diysos ethos: integrity in every project

The programme can still be seen on BBC Iplayer here. It was very much a whirlwind,   but I’m deeply grateful to have played a small part in something that will benefit the local community for years to come. Long after the cameras are gone, that Youth Club will still be doing its job — and that matters.

If there’s one thing the experience reinforced for me, it’s this: good workmanship, done with care, can genuinely make a difference. That’s the approach I bring to all my work, whether I’m volunteering or working with my own clients.

Bringing passion and integrity to your home

I’m Lesley, and my The Decorative Life is about sharing not just creativity and tips, but also a commitment to genuine care in every brushstroke. I hope my DIYSOS Beverley adventure leaves you feeling confident in my approach and inspired to see how that same ethos can transform your own space. I'm excited to bring this dedication to your next decorating project.
