Venetian Lime Plaster: Beautiful Walls for a Healthier Home
Our story
Is Your Home Making You Feel Unwell? Why Natural Lime Plaster Deserves a Second Look
When we think about creating a healthy home, we often focus on eating well, exercising, or buying an air purifier. Yet many of us overlook one of the biggest surfaces in our homes—the walls.
The materials we choose to decorate with can influence the air we breathe every day. Paints, adhesives, synthetic flooring, furniture and even cleaning products can release chemicals into our homes long after they've been installed.
As someone who has spent a lifetime working with decorative finishes, I've become increasingly interested in choosing products that are not only beautiful but also kinder to the indoor environment.
Bringing Ancient Materials into Modern Homes
This bathroom has just been completed using hand-applied Venetian lime plaster.
People are often drawn to its luxurious appearance—the subtle movement, depth and soft sheen that no ordinary paint can imitate. But behind its beauty lies a material that has been used for thousands of years.
Lime plaster isn't a new trend. It's one of the oldest building materials in the world and is still found in many historic buildings because of its remarkable durability and natural properties.
Why Breathability Matters
Modern homes are becoming increasingly airtight, which is excellent for energy efficiency but can create problems if moisture has nowhere to escape.
Unlike many synthetic wall coverings and paints that form a sealed surface, lime plaster is breathable. It allows water vapour to move naturally through the wall rather than trapping moisture beneath the surface.
This helps the wall regulate humidity more naturally and can reduce the conditions in which mould and mildew thrive.
It's important to be realistic, though. Lime plaster isn't a cure for damp caused by leaking pipes, poor ventilation or structural issues. Those problems still need to be addressed. But in a well-maintained home, breathable materials can form part of a healthier approach to building and decorating.
Creating a Less Toxic Home
Many conventional decorating products contain substances known as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). These chemicals slowly evaporate into the air after application and contribute to indoor air pollution. Today's paints are generally much lower in VOCs than they once were, which is great progress. However, when decorating a home, I think it's worth considering every material we introduce—not just paint.
We spend around 90% of our time indoors, so it makes sense to ask:
- What are my walls covered with?
- What is my furniture made from?
- What adhesives have been used?
- What cleaning products am I spraying into the air every day?
No single product will create a healthy home on its own, but making thoughtful choices over time can reduce the number of unnecessary chemicals we're surrounded by.
Naturally Resistant to Mould
One fascinating property of lime is that it's naturally alkaline. This creates a surface that's less hospitable to mould growth than many conventional finishes. Again, it isn't a substitute for fixing damp problems, but it's another reason why lime has remained popular for centuries, particularly in older buildings.
Beauty That Lasts
One of the reasons I love Venetian plaster is that it doesn't look manufactured. Every wall is unique. The movement, texture and light reflect the skill of the craftsperson rather than a printed pattern or factory finish.
It's timeless, elegant and develops character as it ages.
In a world that often encourages us to replace rather than restore, natural materials remind us that beauty doesn't have to be disposable.

Decorating With Wellbeing in Mind
It's about creating spaces where people feel calm, comfortable and well.
Natural materials like lime plaster can play a small but meaningful role in that. Combined with good ventilation, natural fibres, low-VOC products and thoughtful design, they help create homes that don't just look beautiful—they feel good to live in too.
Perhaps that's something we've forgotten over the years. Sometimes the oldest materials still have the most to teach us.
